The value of the equines on battle-field has been dramatically rediscovered during the Kargil operations by the Indian Army. The Indian Army still relies heavily on animal transport for its logistic support in its northern and eastern theatres. With a rich history that dates back to , Equine Breeding Stud engaged in the production of different classes of equines to meet the requirement of military and paramilitary forces. Soon, several studs were opened at different parts of country and the present establishment at Babugarh, located six kms from Hapur town on NH24, came into being in the year as Hapur Remount Depot. In , it was redisgnated as Holding Depot for horses. To cope up with the heavy demand of horses, six Breeding Areas were constituted. This breeding area was producing maximum horses and mules for Army out of the total of six Horse and Mule breeding areas in India After Independence.

This Breeding Area was closed down in and breeding activities were handed over to Civil Veterinary Department at Meerut. It was the first equine breeding organisation of India. In , Lt Col DR Sahani of this establishment was sent on deputation to five European countries to explore the possibilities of import of mares and donkey stallion to overcome the deficiency.

It implies that success of a stud depends upon the efficient planning and execution of it's breeding operations for which professional competence, dedicated hard work, personal involvement of all concerned and constant supervision and guidance at all levels is very essential. Maximum production efficiency of a stud can only be achieved by a proper animal management that includes good nutrition, worm and parasitic control, routine immunization, regular teasing and breeding to a fertile stallion at an appropriate time coinciding with ovulation.

EBS also is responsible for holding for young stock horse, mules and donkeys after weaning till their transfer to Remount Training School and Depots. Since these young stock horses are the future animals required for the replacement of annual wastage of Army animals, a high standard of animal management is practised and the growth of the young stock is regularly monitored.

A full-fledged veterinary wing functioning at the stud is responsible for the health and welfare of all the animals of the stud. The wing has a sound infrastructural base to deal with all kinds of sickness amongst stud animals.

For intensive case and close monitoring of critically ill patients, it has also got an intensive care unit. The wing has a well-equipped operation theatre for undertaking major surgeries. Nutritious, balanced and adequate feeding of breeding stock is a major factor for an increased productivity. This stud is self-sufficient in meeting its fodder requirements.

With a view to meet the fodder requirement of animals throughout the year, cultivation of forage corps is undertaken in the stud as kharif and ravi corps. It is endeavoured to use the least amount of inorganic manures in Indian studs. Therefore, horse dung is primarily used for manuring of fields. Spread over acres of beautiful lush green landscape, the stud is profoundly pursuing the 'green ethos' of the Army.

While acres of its land is used for cultivation of fodder by organic means, the remaining land is a veritable mix of groves, animal lines, water bodies, drains wells and long rows of trees, jungles etc. It is a place where man is at complete peace with nature. With it's healthy biodiversity and ecology the stud can boast to be a visitors delight. Equine Breeding Stud. Horses House.

The cloning was particularly unusual because mules -- the hybrid from a donkey and a horse -- are almost without exception sterile and unable to produce their own young.
