Richard Steffy The glossary is primarily relevant to the first two sections of this handbook and is not meant to be representative of the entire field of maritime archaeology. As an independent contribution, it is an exquisite source of information on ship construction terminology, but also a testament to the work of the late Mr. Steffy, whose influence has been instrumental to the understanding of wooden ship building and the interpretation of shipwrecks and archival material. Words set in bold type are defined elsewhere in the glossary. Entries have been illustrated wherever possible, either within the glossary or in the text. Alternate terms or spellings are listed in brackets after the entry.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: The Industrial Not-Very-Large Ship! - Space Engineers
A davit is any of various crane-like devices used on a ship for supporting, raising, and lowering equipment such as boats and anchors. Davit systems are most often used to lower an emergency lifeboat to the embarkation level to be boarded. Davits can also be used as man-overboard safety devices to retrieve personnel from the water. The lifeboat davit has falls now made of wire, historically of manila rope that are used to lower the lifeboat into the water. The maintaining and operation of davits is all under jurisdiction of the International Maritime Organization. The regulations are enforced by the country's own Coast Guard. The development of the davit from its original "goose neck form" to the current devices advanced greatly when A. Schat patented a number of systems in that allowed the lifeboat to glide over obstructions on a ship's hull, known as the "Schat Skate".

Containers are the most transported method of cargo form in the world as they are transported by all the three transportation systems available i. The aspect of cargo handling of the containers of different dimensions on ships become very critical as they are subjected to harsh weather and strong wind in the mid sea. Different types of cargo handling equipments are used to secure containers to the ship and to other containers stacked on top of other. The details of these equipments are given in cargo securing manual CSM present onboard.

About 70 of them demonstrate marine inventions from the s to the s. These watery innovations offer a glimpse of the ways that inventors, particularly in the nineteenth century, sought to overcome the many challenges Americas encountered working and traveling on the water. The vital importance of maritime commerce to the nation in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries created a fertile environment for maritime innovation. They sought ever more efficient and powerful engines, paddle wheels, and steering systems. They looked for hitherto unknown systems to make ships stronger and build them faster. They devised a mind-boggling array of boats, rafts, buoys, garments, and floating furniture to preserve lives from shipwreck. People from all walks of life held patents in nineteenth-century America.
