Color Play: Simple Quilts, Spectacular Quilting
Alongside my work in marketing which involves a lot of photography for the website as well as Pinterest, Instagram and the Email list, I have also helped my mother take pictures of her crafts for Etsy, as well as eBay. Although my mother creates bags, curtains and blankets, I hope to help you with everything I have learnt along the way in combination with my own research to help you take photos that will sell your quilts on Etsy. How do you photograph quilts for Etsy?
The main thing to focus on is taking multiple images of the quilt from different angles, and being used in different ways. This means that when people are scrolling through all the quilt sellers images on Etsy, more than half are making their initial decision based on what they are seeing, and will also buy based on the supporting images once they have clicked through to the product page.
With a lot of similar quilts being offered, the image quality will be the factor that lets you stand out. Read on to be that person that people choose to click on over others. For the main image, we want to take an image of the quilt in its entirety. This is hard when it is laid down flat on the ground, as it is hard to get high enough to get the whole thing in with the larget quilts. The main way to hang the quilt is out on a washing line held in place with pegs. The pegs can be cropped out later.
For really large quilts, fold it in half over the washing line and take an image of both sides if they are different enough to warrant doing so. Another way is to use a quilt rack. At this point, lighting is a really important point to talk about. A quilt that is really well lit will show the imagery and design but will hide the stitching, material and quilting.
If you are hanging your quilt outside, try to do it near sunrise or sunset when the light is coming from one side, this will create the shadow on the other side of the details. You will need to get the right angle which will be hard, so getting a softbox and doing this inside might be the better option. This is the main question at the heart of it. I have written up a brief step by step guide below, to bring everything above and more into something you can actually do to increase the chances of your photography leading to some nice sales on Etsy.
Before anything else, it is important to get the quilt looking as nice as possible. Give it a nice steam clean, a good iron and use a lint roller to remove any dust or loose threads that may be hiding. This is not needed, but it just keeps things so nice and steady so that you get a much clearer shot. This all depends on how steady your hand is of course.
If you are taking the shot by hand, take three in a row from each angle and choose the best one at the end. Using auto will be fine for most, but for those looking for some extra touches, focus on the following:. It is always worth making a few finishing touches before uploading the quilt. Here are the important things to focus on:. Before uploading the images, head over to the Etsy help page to get the best results.
These are the people that are doing something right. With everything mentioned in this article, combine it with what they are doing and come up with your own unique style to stand out among the crowd! I hope this helped and please do leave any questions or comments below and I will get right back to you. So… How do you photograph quilts for Etsy? Notice how the white background places focus on the quilt This is the main question at the heart of it.
Prepare The Quilt Before anything else, it is important to get the quilt looking as nice as possible. Your decision will depend on the shot variation you are using from step five below. The benefit being that these are much more under your control, rather than waiting for that elusive sunny day at the correct time. Go into the advanced settings to find these. This will smoothen out the image with a good amount of light being allowed into the lens. Just the pressure of doing it manually can move the camera slightly so this is a good tip to follow for those of you who want the best results.
FOCUS — Especially for the close-up images, tap the part of the display that you want people to focus on to get that part and sharp as possible. Camera Angles and Composition Ideas For The Quilt One great composition is to show the quilt as a work in progress this gives people a glimpse behind the process, as well as lets them see the quilt as more worth the money, due to all the work that has been put in behind the scenes.
THE MAIN IMAGE — Using the washing line for larger quilts, or the quilt rack or white foam board for smaller quilts, have an even light distribution over the whole surface so that the design is the focal point of the image. Adding a nice fold in there will allow more of the surface area into the image too. This is like a visual replacement for feeling the material with your hands. Showing this is the close-up images will impress the Etsy viewers, hopefully enough to buy!
Editing The Quilt Images It is always worth making a few finishing touches before uploading the quilt. The following are a few hints to help you out: Keywords — These are the tags and words to put in your title. Social media — Pinterest and Instagram are visual platforms. Upload all your stuff to these and link back to your site.

Duvets + Quilts
Quilting is the process of sewing two or more layers of fabric together to make a thicker padded material, usually to create a quilt or quilted garment. Typically, quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material, but many different styles are adopted. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material to make a quilt. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire area where quilting is wanted. Quilting is done to create bed coverings, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products.
