In our world today, and to an ever-increasing extent in the years to come, no product sold on the market can be developed without taking into considerations its impact on the environment. This statement is particularly valid for a food product such as sugar, given the rising interest and expansion of markets for natural and organic products obtained through procedures, both in the agricultural and industrial stages, in which the use of chemicals and damage to the local and global environment are avoided or reduced to a minimum. Amidst the tense, controversial discussions taking place at present within the so-called Millennium Round, its agricultural negotiations and the issue of whether to include environmental matters in these talks, cane sugar producers have many advantages to offer and arguments to show the superiority of cane as a raw material for food and energy production; as opposed to other raw materials for sugar or substitute sweetener production such as corn and sugar beets. The aim of this paper is to attempt to present a brief summary of the potential of sugar cane as regards the environment as well as to discuss the current status of environmental legislation in effect in countries in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

The methodology developed can be used for wastewaters generated by other polluting industries like tanneries. Indian scientists have demonstrated that wastewater from some of the dirtiest industrial processes can be turned into a carbon source for preparation of energy storage materials. Such electrochemical material can be used to make electrodes, sensors and supercapacitors which find applications in digital devices. In a two-step process, spent wash from a distillery was acidified to bring its pH down to about 2. The acidified solution was stirred overnight at room temperature, resulting in precipitation of solid mass or sludge.

The world has witnessed several revolutions since the dawn of industrial revolution some two centuries ago. During the current century itself, three revolutions in the area of communication, information processing and quality have taken place and each time the standard of living of man improved beyond predictions. But during the same period, the world population has also phenomenally increased dwarfing the gains achieved from the development. Increased level of industrial activity to meet the of humanity has caused irreversible damage to the pristine environment that the demand Earth once had. Economic disparity between the haves and havenots has widened, aggravating the situation further more. Ozone layer depletion, warming up of Earth's atmosphere and the pollution created by uncontrolled industrial activity to gain economic strength are now assuming the proportion of a catastrophe that may eventually threaten the survival of life on Earth.

Without water, many companies and the products they provide would fail to exist. Water use is a fundamental commodity for nearly every step of the manufacturing and production processes around the world. Whether it's deionised water for electronics and pharmaceutical sectors, or softened water for boiler feed applications, water is necessary and comes embedded in the footprint of virtually item created on the planet. Yet, at the same time, many global companies have manufacturing facilities operating in water scarce parts of the world, with over two thirds of companies now reporting exposure to water risks. This article is designed to provide an essential guide to everything you need to know about industrial water and wastewater. Manufacturing and other industries use water during the production process for either creating their products or cooling equipment used in creating their products. According to the United States Geological Survey USGS , industrial water is used for fabricating, processing, washing, diluting, cooling, or transporting a product. Industrial water and wastewater is a by-product of industrial or commercial activities.

Apr 30, - industry sector EHS guidelines are designed to be used together with the solid waste and by-products (e.g. leaves from cane or beet, molasses from the final board manufacturing)., Other solid wastes from the sugar manufacturing from beet processing activities and storage facilities. Use of sugarcane industrial by-products for improving sugarcane productivity and soil health

The objective of this study was to develop a method for the thermally-assisted acidic hydrolysis of waste biomass from the sugar industry sugar beet pulp and leaves for chemical and biotechnological purposes. The distillates, containing furfural, can be catalytically reduced directly into furfurayl alcohol or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The sugars present in the hydrolysates can be converted by lactic bacteria into lactic acid, which, by catalytic reduction, leads to propylene glycol. The sugars may also be utilized by microorganisms in the process of cell proliferation, and the biomass obtained used as a protein supplement in animal feed. Our study also considered the effects of the mode and length of preservation fresh, ensilage, and drying on the yields of furfural and monosaccharides. The yield of furfural in the distillates was measured using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector GC-FID. The content of monosaccharides in the hydrolysates was measured spectrophotometrically using enzymatic kits.

Sugar Industry. The researchers conclude that the debates we now have on sugar's effects on our health are potentially rooted in six decades of the sugar industry's manipulation of scientific evidence. As reported by The New York Times: The sugar industry is the largest agro-based industry and India is the Second largest producer of sugar in the world next only to Brazil. The sugar industry, like financial services, is too big to fail. Belize has a successful sugar cane industry. Our experience encompasses all key operational areas within the industry including sugar milling, sugar refining and packaging, co-generation, ethanol and liquid fertilizer production and agricultural, harvesting and logistics. The country relies heavily on its sugar and rum exports and the development of the sugar industry has played a pivotal role in Belize.

Sugarcane industries are age-old industrial practices in India which contribute a significant amount of by-products as waste. Handling and management of these by-products are huge task, because those require lot of space for storage.

Paturau 1. This gloomy prospect explains, to a large degree, the renewed interest in the byproducts of the sugarcane industry which has developed in the last ten years and which has shown that the optimal use of byproducts can provide a non-negligible support to the sugarcane industry, although it could not, by itself, completely redress the difficult situation sugar is presently experiencing. The four main byproducts of the sugarcane industry are cane tops, bagasse, filter muds and molasses Figure 1. If we accept that the present world production of sugarcane has reached the 60 million tonnes level, then the quantities of these byproducts produced yearly are approximately the following:.
