The Finger Lakes wine appellation is often compared to the German wine regions along the Rhine River. Riesling, one of the most important commercial wine grape varieties, also serves as the most prominent varietal on our vineyard, comprising over half of the 28 acres of plantings. The vineyard has significant plantings of other popular German varietals such as Gewurztraminer and Blaufrankisch, although the grapes of Burgundy and Bordeaux play an important role in our production as well. The deep waters of the Finger Lakes help to moderate the local microclimate. Stored heat is released from the lakes during the winter, keeping the local climate relatively mild compared to surrounding areas and preventing early season frost.

The cookies are characterized by their subtle citrus flavor, while the use of ammonium bicarbonate in the buttery base provides for an incredibly crumbly, tender texture. Their unusual appearance is said to be reminiscent of two serpents entangled in the shape of a heart, a tradition that is believed to stem from pagan times when serpents were used as a symbol of fortune. When baked, each cookie is dipped in a traditional rose liqueur, and then into coarse sugar. Once a staple among the miners who would enjoy it during the long working hours, this savory pie consists of a cheese filling that is neatly wrapped between two thin layers of dough.

Proper glassware is more than just a flourish for your dining table. The right glass changes how you smell and taste wine, and it should inspire confidence as you swirl, sniff, and sip. This inexpensive tulip-shaped glass showcases both red and white wines well. The shape is nicely balanced with a thin lip that makes it feel more sophisticated than other clunky, inexpensive glasses. This is a stylish stemless glass that you can use for more than just wine. For casual drinking, we recommend the Rastal Harmony glass, which is sturdier and better looking than the other stemless options we tested. The angled sides give it a modern look and also make it hard to knock over, which is ideal for large parties. The Harmony was pleasant to drink out of and a comfortable size for most people to wrap their hand around. Our experts recommend the Harmony for enjoying inexpensive, refreshing wines, but you could also use it as a water or highball glass. Just know that all stemless glasses come with downsides: Because you have to hold them by the bowl, your hands will warm up the wine, while leaving unsightly fingerprints on the outside.

Merlot is a dark blue-colored wine grape variety , that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle , the French name for the blackbird , probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening , makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon , which tends to be higher in tannin.

This distinction is important. Despite web sites, catalogs, and the talented sales representatives showing off their collections — many dinnerware companies no longer actually make what they sell. Rather, they source from nameless and often unknown, unsupervised factories located in any corner of the world where labor can be had cheap. And somewhere along the line all of this became okay.
